Use Your Phone as a Barcode Scanner for Mac Apps
Your Mac already runs the software you work in – Excel, Numbers, ERP in the browser, accounting tools, warehouse screens. What it often lacks is a scanner at the cursor. With WiScanner, your phone becomes the barcode reader and the Mac desktop client types each code into whatever application is focused. No USB gun, no special driver for every program, no pasting from a cloud folder.
The idea: phone scans, Mac apps receive
Most Mac applications already accept keyboard input. A classic USB scanner “types” the barcode and often presses Return. WiScanner follows the same pattern wirelessly: the phone camera reads the code on the floor or shelf; the WiScanner Mac app injects that text into the active field – just like a keyboard wedge.
If you can click a field and type, you can scan into it from your phone. That covers almost every Mac desktop and browser-based tool.
Which Mac programs does this work with?
- Microsoft Excel & Apple Numbers – stock counts, SKU lists, receiving logs.
- ERP / MRP / WMS in the browser – goods receipt, pick confirmation, item lookup in Safari or Chrome.
- Accounting & invoicing apps – product codes on lines that expect keyboard entry.
- Browser apps on Mac – Shopify admin, ikas, Google Sheets, custom web ERPs.
- Internal tools – FileMaker-style forms, desktop CRMs, label software with a text field.

Set up phone → Mac barcode scanning
-
Install WiScanner on your phone (iPhone or Android).
-
Install the Mac client and leave it running in the background.
- Join the same WiFi on phone and Mac (avoid isolated guest WiFi).
- Pair once with the QR code shown by the Mac app.
- Open your Mac application, click into the field that should receive the code, then scan with the phone. The value appears at the cursor.
Why this fits Mac workplaces
- No app rewrite – existing Mac and browser software keeps working; it only sees keystrokes.
- Desk Mac, pocket scanner – leave the display at the station; walk the aisle with the phone.
- Local network – barcodes stay on your LAN; scanning does not depend on internet.
- Lower hardware cost – skip buying a scanner for every sparse workstation.
Settings that make Mac entry smoother
- Auto Enter / Return – submit the field or jump to the next spreadsheet row after each scan.
- Tab after scan – move across columns in grid-style Mac forms.
- Sound / vibration on the phone – confirm the read without staring at the screen.
- Quantity mode – count repeats of the same SKU during shelf walks.
- Prefix, suffix, regex cleanup – match what your Mac ERP expects before the keystrokes hit the field.
A practical day on the floor
Staff open the goods-receipt screen in a browser on a Mac, click the barcode field, and scan cartons with their phone. Office teammates run cycle counts in Excel or Numbers on the same WiFi. Retailers verify shelf labels into a browser-based stock tool. One phone client, one Mac client, many applications – because the “integration” is the keyboard focus, not a custom plugin per program.
